Newport Rhode Island is one of the most beautiful places to visit. It is rich in history, boasting the highest number of surviving Colonial buildings in the US (according to Wiki) and was founded in 1639. During the Gilded Age in the mid-1800’s, wealthy Southern planters seeking to escape the oppressive heat, built ‘Summer cottages’ such as the Breakers (shown in the following photos). Many of the nations wealthiest families such as the Vanderbilts and Astors resided in Newport for a social season of fun, and to maintain their status in high society.
Today, Newport is a beautiful place to visit to walk the amazing Cliff Walk, tour the preserved Newport Mansions, or take a boat tour as we did, for a view of stately homes on the water, historical lighthouses, and breathtaking views of the natural scenery.
