The Garner Arts Center’s home is a former pre-Civil War textile mill. It has been designated as a Historic District and listed on the National and New York State Registers of Historic Places.

The Garner Arts Festival 2015 included an amazing array of textile art and crafts. It included demonstrations such as fleece to shawl artisans, dyeing, weaving and printmaking. We enjoyed outdoor concerts while tasting local food service as well.

The open Studio tours were especially interesting, listening to how the artists create their work. This included looking at the massive tools involved in creating custom wood furniture, to the intricate art of stained glass. I brought my kids who actually learned something, and had fun!

The common element throughout is good design. There’s always a reason why an element is chosen for a certain place, whether it’s a colorful painting in a room or a specific fabric on a chair. There’s also a functionality to every item that is unique to each project’s solution. It’s sort of like an oversized jigsaw puzzle with a place and reason for each piece.
