Speaker Event ~ Renee Curci Ivanoff

Renee Ivanoff, New York-based potter and ceramist is the founder of RCI Pottery. She has over 25 years of expertise in ceramics and is a teaching artist at the Garrison Art Center, Garrison, NY and co-owner of the Croton River Artisans Gallery in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Renee’s love of pottery and her teaching reflect the deep commitment to blending traditional techniques with contemporary design. Most of her pottery is functional, not so sculptural, and Renee likes to say her work is ‘earth to table.’

She is dedicated to sharing her craft and now teaches children, teenagers, and adults. Her passion for pottery continues to grow and Renee is always exploring new ways to bring her modern style to ceramics.

Ceramic Inspiration

For her presentation, Renee spoke about how the love of pottery began, and why she wanted to learn more about mining clay from the ground and turning it into a pot or vessel. This turning point set the stage for where she is now in her second career. There are so many areas to explore about this ancient art – the tools, techniques, types of clay and how it has evolved.

Innovative tools used to create pottery:

  • Slab Roller
  • Extruder
  • Wheel Throwing (most are now electric instead of a kick wheel)
  • Armature

Different types of clay bodies used to form and make pottery:

  • Wheel thrown
  • Hand built
  • Slab

The common element throughout is good design. There’s always a reason why an element is chosen for a certain place, whether it’s a colorful painting in a room or a specific fabric on a chair. There’s also a functionality to every item that is unique to each project’s solution. It’s sort of like an oversized jigsaw puzzle with a place and reason for each piece.
