Contemporary Cottage with Curb Appeal

A 1920s cottage was in need of a new entryway and front door to reflect the rest of the home’s appealing atmosphere and provide functional value. An immediate first task was to replace the very steep stairs leading to the door. They were so steep that when the original door was opened a person would almost fall off the step. Then, a new wood framed front door with custom stained glass was installed. This beautiful door has now become a focal point both inside and out.

Moving Inside

The next area to tackle was the indoor porch. Cement steps were replaced with wood and from the entry, two sets of french doors were installed that lead into an Asian inspired living room. The fireplace also received a long overdue whitewashing to brighten up tired, dark brick. And the hearth was updated with a gray stone slab replacing broken terracotta tiles.

Flanking the entry is a home office on the right and a cozy reading nook to the left. In the center, across from the front door, is a custom built-in for coats, shoes and backpacks to accommodate a busy family of four. This new organized space provides a welcoming view as you walk into the home. The final details included a fresh coat of paint in the living room, crown moldings, heating, new window treatments and lighting fixtures.

What was once a simple stone entryway with cement floors has become a gorgeous year-round, functional space. The glass color and design were chosen to meld with the colorful garden and lush greenery outdoors.

The updated space fits with the clients style directive: simple, organic, clean with asian influences. It was a great pleasure to work on this truly collaborative project.

The common element throughout is good design. There’s always a reason why an element is chosen for a certain place, whether it’s a colorful painting in a room or a specific fabric on a chair. There’s also a functionality to every item that is unique to each project’s solution. It’s sort of like an oversized jigsaw puzzle with a place and reason for each piece.

“Your rooms are like a painting. Each component is a brushstroke to create the whole picture. It’s magic every time!”
