Contemporary Family Room Makeover

A family home was in need of a serious makeover. It was very outdated and many parts of the house were in disrepair. The client wanted a new design that celebrated the beautiful views and surrounding landscape.

Transforming a Much Loved Space

The work started in the Family Room and Entryway. To enjoy the lovely backyard, existing windows and sliders on the outdoor wall were replaced with two new sets of matching sliders and a stationary picture window. And to accommodate these changes, all of the baseboard heating was moved. In order to further open and brighten the space, a large, dark wood built-in TV/bookcase on the exterior wall was removed.

However, one item in this room was kept – the interesting wood plank on the ceiling. It was hand sanded and sealed to fix the water stains from previously leaking skylights. Then the ceiling fans were replaced, all floors were sanded and newly stained a darker color. The last step was to paint the room with a new color that blends well with the new look.

A Show Stopper

The most dramatic change in this room was the fireplace. An odd, very tall hearth was replaced with custom stonework from floor to ceiling, which adds architectural interest and an immediate “wow” factor when you walk in. This exaggerated update called out the beautiful roof lines and now creates a nice flow to the first floor. Also, the mantle was removed and the TV was placed above for a sleek, contemporary look in keeping with the house style. Lastly, all new furniture was ordered, including a large comfortable sectional where the family can watch TV together.

A New Entryway

It’s the first room people see when they arrive, so it should make a statement. New herringbone patterned tile was installed to unify the entry to the three rooms that are accessible from the front of the house. In the spring, there will be a new door and the installation of a new chandelier.

Stay tuned for completed photos of these spaces and the amazing kitchen transformation to come.

The common element throughout is good design. There’s always a reason why an element is chosen for a certain place, whether it’s a colorful painting in a room or a specific fabric on a chair. There’s also a functionality to every item that is unique to each project’s solution. It’s sort of like an oversized jigsaw puzzle with a place and reason for each piece.

“Your rooms are like a painting. Each component is a brushstroke to create the whole picture. It’s magic every time!”
